Nathi Gcabashe Releases "Strength" on South African Youth Day

by Goin' Native Records, Label

When Nathi Gcabashe chose June 16th to release her second album Strength, the date was no accident. June 16th is Youth Day in South Africa — a day that commemorates the courage of young people who stood up for justice in 1976, and a day that carries deep meaning for any South African artist.

An Album Built on Purpose

Strength is more than a collection of songs. Its themes of unity, self-awareness, and self-development reflect Nathi's own journey as an artist who has performed on the world's biggest stages while staying rooted in her KwaZulu-Natal heritage.

As a Grammy-nominated songwriter, Nathi has shared stages with Jill Scott, Billy Ocean, Diana Ross, and Mary Mary. She performed at both the 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cup celebrations and the Montego Bay Jazz Festival. But Strength is her most personal work — an album that speaks directly to the next generation of African artists.

The Voice of Strength Documentary

Alongside the album, Nathi released a companion documentary titled The Voice of Strength in August 2020. The film features commentary from some of South Africa's most revered musical figures:

  • Hugh Masekela — the legendary trumpeter and anti-apartheid activist
  • Bakithi Kumalo — the bassist from Paul Simon's Graceland, one of the most important albums in world music history
  • Vusi Mahlasela — the "Voice of South Africa," a singer-songwriter whose music helped define post-apartheid culture

Their words add weight and context to Nathi's music, placing it within the broader tradition of South African artists using their voices for something greater than entertainment.

World Music with a Message

Nathi Gcabashe represents the best of what Goin' Native Records is about — an artist whose music carries the soul of her homeland while speaking to universal human experiences. Strength is available now on all streaming platforms.
